Many technicians have noticed that the same cylinder pushes out with great force but retracts with noticeably less. This is not a defect — it is a normal structural principle. Cylinder thrust equals air pressure multiplied by the effective area. On extension, air pushes against the full piston area, generating maximum force. On retraction, the piston rod occupies part of the area, reducing the effective force area and therefore the retraction force. When designing equipment, always calculate whether the retraction pull force is sufficient — especially when pulling heavy loads — otherwise the cylinder may retract slowly or incompletely. Selecting the right bore diameter in advance avoids costly rework.
